ILLU6050 - Business Cards

Business cards

Business cards are a good way of getting information across to an audience. They should communicate what the brand is and where to find them on social media etc. There are a wide range of different ways to produce business cards, coming in all sorts of different, single sided or double sided. Some are better produced than others. Below are some business/artist cards I have collected recently.

Developing Ideas
For my own cards, I decided I would make 2 different types; 8.5 cm x 5.5 cm and 5.5 cm x 5.5 cm. I also decided for this, I wanted to change my online username, as the one I have at the moment is one I have been using for almost 10 years.

After a lot of brainstorming, I decided to choose a name that was easy to remember, but unique - a big help in the online world. I tried lots of different names out, but very few fitted with what I wanted to communicate. I spend the next few weeks scribbling down any little idea I had.

In the end, I ended up going with the name cowberri.kat after trying different ideas, and combinations - ensuring the name wasn't taken on different platforms.

Looking at the different types of business cards I had, most featured a more graphic type of illustration, making them stand out from a small distance. As a starting point, I looked at vector lines - or clean linework that gave the illusion of vector linework.

Shrinking down the two versions of the cat, the one of the right looked more playful due to the dots working with the lines. It gave the illusion of a different line width when compared with the one on the left.

I also preferring the process of creating the left one much more - as it allowed more playful line variation and allowed me to keep freehand drawing lines.

After Feedback - CYMK and Trimming Issues

After getting feedback, I decided to rework my business card - ensuring the information sat closer to the middle of the card as it didn't get cut off accidentally when they went out for production. I also removed the border, as this would be a pain if part of it was to get cut off in the manufacturing stage.

I also printed out my mock-ups, and found that the light colour was difficult to read. For this reason, I decided to change the colour to a deeper pink. This made the text stand out. Comparing them to the earlier versions, I was happier with these outcomes.
